Dalam rangka alih fungsi SPG / SGO menjadi SMTA sesuai dengan Keputusan Direktur Jendral Pendidikan Dasar dan Menengah Departemen Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan No. 178/C/Kep/1989 Tentang Pedoman Pelaksanaan Alih Fungsi Sekolah Pendidikan Guru dan Sekolah Guru Olah Raga menjadi Sekolah Lanjutan Tingkat Atas Lainnya. Maka pada Tahun 1988 SPG / SGO alih fungsi menjadi SMA Negeri 3 Boyolali yang terdiri dari 4 kelas siswa, karena uantuk kelas II, III masih siswa-siswi SPG.
